Supervised by Paul Luna This project was completed as part of the MA in Book Design at the University of Reading. The purpose of this project was to learn detailed typography and how to handle different typographic elements in a series design.
Supervised by Ruth Blacksell and Paul Luna Client: Oxford University Press This project was completed as part of the MA in Book Design at the University of Reading and aimed to give us real-life experience when designing for a client. Again I worked under Paul Luna to create a series design for Henry Hardy’s works on Isaiah Berlin for Oxford University Press. The client wanted the works to be redesigned for a fresh, new audience while still maintaining an overall classic typographical feel.
Ciné Roman Project
Supervised by John Morgan This project was completed as part of the MA in Book Design at the University of Reading and we were tasked with taking a film and turning it into a book. I chose Melancholia, by Lars Von Trier, taking inspiration from Von Trier’s contribution to Dogme 95, and created five books each with their own set of design constraints.
Jacket Series Design
Supervised by Fraser Muggeridge This project was completed as part of the MA in Book Design at the University of Reading. The purpose was for us to explore new design techniques to bring a fresh look to a series of books either imagined or already in existence. I chose to redesign a series of travel books based on the website The Culture Trip and took inspiration from local street art found throughout London, Paris and New York.
For this project I was approached by a bride and groom to create a poster for their signature drink cocktail. They recently adopted a greyhound named Clyde and wanted to include him in their special day, so they created a signature drink for their wedding guests to enjoy. The goal was to create an eye-catching poster that reflected their 1920s theme.
Worked with Sara Reynolds from Behind the Book. Behind the Book is an organization based in New York City that aims to encourage literacy amongst the city’s youth by bringing accomplished authors and their books into the classrooms. This project was in collaboration with the students of Class N, Class O and Class P at the International Community High School. We created an anthology of their written work, and corresponding artwork, aiming to create a book that emulated a ‘literary magazine’.
Bridal Shower Invitation
Tasked with creating a rustic and simple tea party themed invitation for a bride-to-be. After discussing design ideas with the bridesmaids, we decided the invitation would be designed in the shape of a tea bag and that the invitation would follow a simple black-and-white design, using a soft blue to accent the design and offer a pop of colour.
With an update completed to my website, I decided that an important addition would be to create a logo that clearly demonstrated my skills as a book designer. I wanted the focus to be on my initials, ‘S’ and ‘L’, and played with the angle of the ‘L’ to incorporate a small graphic of a book to indicate the main focus of my design.
Channel of Peace
Worked with our Senior Designer at House of Anansi Press to create the text design for this memoir. The goal was to create a simple and subtle text design that would be able to handle several different challenges, including excerpts, an 8-page colour photo insert and a list in the appendix.
Power Politics (A List Edition)
This was an A List series reissue of Margaret Atwood’s Power Politics. The A List is a series design, reintroducing some of House of Anansi’s classic books. The challenge of this project was to maintain the integrity of the original text design, while updating it to fit as part of a series design.
The Breadwinner: A Graphic Novel
With the help of Groundwood Books’ Art Director, I created this graphic novel layout using stills from the Oscar nominated film The Breadwinner. The goal was to create a layout that would match the pace of the film, translating the story from screen to page.
